The Presbytery of Port Phillip West - History
The Presbytery of Port Phillip West came into being in 2008 following the Synod led process which amalgamated fourteen Victorian and Tasmanian Presbyteries into eight. Most of the former Barwon Presbytery placements, the Maribyrnong Valley Presbytery and one placement from the former Yarra Valley Presbytery came together to make the Presbytery of Port Phillip West Our vision is a Presbytery in which all member congregations and associated agencies, schools and missions are energised by the Holy Spirit to respond to the call of Jesus to embrace the reign of God.
A Presbytery Vision
“Through the work of the Spirit of Christ: For the Presbytery of Port Phillip West to be a network of increasingly vibrant, diverse, contextual and disciple-making communities of Christ participating in and witnessing to the wonder of God’s mission.”
The Role of the Presbytery
The Presbytery… is to perform all the acts of oversight necessary to the life and mission of the Church in the area for which it is responsible… It will in particular exercise oversight of the congregations within its bounds, encouraging them to strengthen one another’s faith, to bear one another’s burdens, and exhorting them to fulfil their high calling in Christ Jesus. It will promote these wider aspects of the Church committed to it by Synod or the Assembly. – Basis of Union, para 15c.
